The ideas that guide the content of this recording connect to discussions raised by Henry Threadgill, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, American Composers Orchestra Artistic Director Derek Bermel, and many others over increasing the role of improvisation in classical music. This group of thought-leading contemporary musicians believe the essence of music is not improvisation or notation, but improvisation and notation and the magic made through both means. Over the years, Harper has performed with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Roscoe Mitchell, Dave Holland, Orrin Evans, Freddie Bryant, Tim Warfield and Uri Caine. He performed with violinist Regina Carter for two years and toured the U.S., Europe, South America and the Caribbean.
