about

Speaking of Shakespeare, Matthew Parrish's impressionistic "Caliban's Nightmare" provides the ensemble an opportunity to text paint and insinuate (absent the programmatic references inherent in the title some listeners might use the term "free" improvisation to describe some moments in this composition). The contrasting sections allocated to each soloist are carefully structured in order to provide specific support to the Caliban story as it evolves; whether by building tension through reiterative ostinato (as in the use of the 7/8 figure behind the clarinet solo), or by lack of concrete thematic or rhythmic material (as in the musically ambiguous denouement).
