Darryl Harper is a master of disguise, as his introductory treatment of the standard "Autumn Leaves" will attest (he calls it "Falling Leaves"). In the first few measures, I was reminded of Bartok's children's piece "Leaves, Falling Leaves," but the resemblance may be in part coincidental, due to a similar use of modality and quartal harmony to more poignantly support the simplest of diatonic material. The music is a solo vehicle for Kyle Koehler, who proves himself an adept and sensitive vocalist in this rendition (and it is not always so easy for pianists to sing).
