about

A foreboding modal pedal point introduces us to "How Now," written by Darryl for his wife and fellow artist, Sonya. Contrasting with this introduction is the surprising tonal brightness of the tune itself, which is of course based on the Coltrane epic "Giant Steps." The ostinato makes a rondo like reappearance through the form, providing further contrast. As with 'Trane's original opus, the ease and apparent simplicity of the melodic statement disguises the incredible atonal complexity of its underlying harmonic structure. Just as 'Trane's original version showed his most energetic side, so The Onus interprets Darryl's vehicle with their own characteristic elan and subtlety, avoiding the pitfall of becoming yet another band attempting to match 'Trane's athleticism and in the process failing to put its own imprint on the piece. Being able to play over these changes is no small feat, but doing so with an individual voice is perhaps an even greater challenge, and gives evidence of maturity and sophistication lacking in most young virtuosos.
