about

Manager Tony Haywood, whose beautiful ballad "Bliss" graced the group's first album, contributes the album's third take on the blues with his wistful "I Wonder." The lazy chordal and rhythmic ostinato which underpin the piece make it sound vaguely evocative of a time and place which is deeply familiar, yet which we can't quite place. The mood is pretty purely that of the blues during the guitar solo, while in the clarinet solo Coltrane's well-known "cry" is evoked by Darryl. A McCoy-ish polyrhythmic intensity characterizes the climax of the piano solo before a return to the contemplative, resonant and nostalgic initial mood of the piece.
