Joe Henderson's "Inner Urge" is a classic of the modal style of composition, in its own way representing a challenge to the improviser comparable to that of "Giant Steps." The inclusion of "Inner Urge" on this disc is yet another reminder, if one were necessary, of the historical awareness of Darryl and his group, and of their consciousness of the need to sink their roots deep in the rich soil of the tradition in order to have their own individuality come to its fullest fruition. The piece features the rhythm section alone, which is illustrative of the value placed on everyone's voice in this communal, synergistic gathering of talented, perspicacious young musicians.
