about

Jeff Ray's beautiful "Letter to my Brother" is a study in the compositional good marriage between rhythmic and harmonic richness. Beginning with a standard harmonic phrase and two feel, the piece swings its way through the relatively static harmonic moments which demarcate its bridge, then takes a series of alternate routes to an inevitable funk-oriented modal final phrase. The intrinsic integration of the harmonic and rhythmic propulsion of the piece is so perfect that its every moment sounds inevitable (This is to take nothing away from the wonderful solos, but the composition is an absolutely beautifully constructed vehicle). And the coda BURNS before fading away.
