about

Darryl's "Narcolepsy" provides the album's fourth take on the blues, forming a sort of a book end with the opener, "Nostalgia in Times Square." Indeed, it is this reiteration of the blues form, each time with a "signal (compositional) difference" which provides an underlying structural and thematic continuity to the entire album, much the same purpose as was accomplished by Ellington's use of the four pieces in 'sonnet' form in his "Such Sweet Thunder." A further element on internal symmetry (form within a form) is the manner in which the bass solo announces both the beginning and the end of this penultimate piece.
