about

"Nina" is a laid-back modal vehicle written by Darryl when he was in high school. The beautiful blend and unanimity of phrasing between the clarinet and guitar is in evidence as their comfortable melodic statement lulls us into the piano and clarinet solos, which weave their way subtly within and outside of the harmonies stated by the modal ostinato carried by the bass. The mood of the piece, as well as the way it successfully develops rhythmic and harmonic complexity from a harmonic foundation of nearly complacent simplicity, is reminiscent of Charles Lloyd and Keith Jarret's performances on "Forest Flower."
