about

The opener, Mingus' venerable 12-bar form (some might avoid calling this a blues because of its clever and non-traditional substitution for the IV chord), is neatly introduced by Darryl's two-note query, which may initially deceive listeners into thinking they're being led into Coltrane's version of "Inchworm." But the introduction is not the only fresh aspect of Darryl's arrangement, which is cast in a modern groove, alternating between modal and swing sections, even varying Mingus' original melody to fit the rhythmic context and the ensemble's instrumental timbres. Intensity is built carefully throughout the clarinet solo, then returns to ground zero before building in similar fashion for guitar, piano and bass solos. This gradual buildup in intensity is recapitulated in the coda, lending symmetry to the form.
